Michael Kinane, born on June 22, 1959, is a famous Irish former jockey. He rode horses in races for 34 years before he retired on December 8, 2009.

Michael was incredibly successful, winning many big races in Ireland, England, and France for over twenty years. He won the 2,000 Guineas four times and the famous Derby three times. He even won the Melbourne Cup in Australia and the Belmont Stakes in the United States. Michael also won four Breeders' Cup races. He was named the Irish flat racing Champion Jockey 13 times, which is a huge achievement!

He first became well-known as the main jockey for trainer Liam Browne. In 1982, he won the Irish 2000 Guineas and the St James Palace Stakes on a horse named Dara Monarch. He also finished second in the 1983 Epsom Derby. Later, he worked for Dermot Weld. For many years, he was the main jockey for John Magnier and Aidan O'Brien at Ballydoyle, a famous horse training center. After that, he joined another top Irish trainer, John Oxx. Michael became one of the best jockeys in the world, especially good at big races like those at Longchamp and Epsom. People thought he was one of the most professional riders in horse racing.

He stopped racing at the end of 2009. That year was very special because he rode the amazing horse Sea The Stars. Michael also bred the horse Authorized, who won the Epsom Derby in 2007.

Life After Racing

After retiring as a jockey, Michael Kinane started working for the Hong Kong Jockey Club. His job is to find and choose horses in Europe that would be good for racing in Hong Kong. These horses are then sold by the Hong Kong Jockey Club at an auction.

Family Life

Michael's father, Tommy Kinane, was also a very successful jockey. Tommy was a top National Hunt jockey, which means he rode horses over jumps. He won the famous Champion Hurdle race on a horse called Monksfield.
