Michael J. Kinane, born on June 22, 1959, is a famous Irish former flat racing jockey. He had an amazing 34-year career, riding horses in races all over the world. He retired on December 8, 2009.

Michael was known for winning many important races in Ireland, England, and France. He won the 2,000 Guineas four times and The Derby three times. He also won the Melbourne Cup in Australia and the Belmont Stakes in the United States. Michael also achieved four wins in Breeders' Cup races. He was named Irish Champion Jockey 13 times, which is a huge accomplishment!

Michael Kinane's Racing Career

Michael first became well-known as the main jockey for Liam Browne. In 1982, he won the Irish 2000 Guineas and the St James Palace Stakes on a horse named Dara Monarch. He also finished second in the 1983 Epsom Derby. After that, he started working with Dermot Weld.

Riding for Top Trainers

For many years, Michael was the main jockey for John Magnier and Aidan O'Brien at Ballydoyle, a famous horse training center. Later, he joined another top Irish trainer, John Oxx. He became one of the best jockeys in the world. He was especially good at big races like those at Longchamp and Epsom. People saw him as a true professional in horse racing.

A High Note Retirement

Michael Kinane decided to retire at the end of 2009. He said he retired "on an incredible high." That year, he rode a horse named Sea The Stars to six major wins. This included a special achievement: winning the 2000 Guineas, the Derby, and the Arc de Triomphe all in the same year. This was a truly rare and impressive feat. Michael also bred the horse Authorized, who won the 2007 Epsom Derby.

After His Jockey Days

After retiring from riding, Michael Kinane started a new role. He now works for the Hong Kong Jockey Club in Europe. His job is to find and choose horses that would be good for racing in Hong Kong. These horses are then sold by the Hong Kong Jockey Club at an auction.

Family Life

Michael's father, Tommy Kinane, was also a very successful jockey. Tommy was a leading National Hunt jockey, which means he rode horses over jumps. He even won the famous Champion Hurdle race on a horse called Monksfield.
