About Michelle de Bruin

Michelle de Bruin started her art journey by studying at the Lincoln School of Art. Later, she went to the Glasgow School of Art. She finished her studies in the Sculpture Department in 1990.

Her Amazing Sculptures

Michelle's early sculptures were made for public spaces. You can find information about them in books like "Sculpture in Glasgow." She used to create art for everyone to see in cities.

However, Michelle decided to focus on her own unique art. She loves to explore ideas about "misinformation." This means she creates sculptures of animals that might seem a bit mixed up or unusual. She even has a special collection called a "Broom Cupboard" filled with these unique animal creations.

Michelle says her work often explores how facts, words, and stories can sometimes get confusing. She likes to make art that makes people think about what is real or not.

Awards and Exhibitions

Michelle de Bruin has won some cool awards for her art. One was the JD Fergusson award. This award let her travel to Italy and then to Washington DC. There, she worked with scientists at the Smithsonian museum. She helped recreate ancient creatures from the Burgess Shale using stone. Imagine bringing dinosaurs back to life in stone!

She also received an award from the Scottish Crafts Council. This helped her improve her skills even more. In 2013, she won the Inches Carr Craft Award.

Michelle's sculptures have been shown in many places. She has exhibited twice at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh. Her work has also been displayed in galleries in Perth and Kinross and Berwick upon Tweed. You can find her art in private collections and in the permanent collections of the JD Fergusson Trust and Perth Museums.

Stone Carving and TV Appearances

Besides her own art, Michelle is also a skilled letter cutter and stone carver. She has worked on important projects to fix and preserve old buildings across Scotland. For example, she helped restore the Fisherman's Monument in Dunbar. She also worked on the huge £33 million restoration of McEwan Hall in Edinburgh.

You might have even seen her on TV! Michelle appeared on the show Time Team. On the show, she was asked to carve an Anglo-Saxon throne. This throne was created from just a small piece of an old fragment they found. Now, this amazing throne is on permanent display at Bamburgh Castle. Michelle also creates memorials that you can see in the Scottish Borders and Northern England.
