Middle Rasen
Red-brown church with limestone pinnacles and details. A square tower on the left, the nave on the right under a low roof hidden behind castellations in the same material. We can see a neat porch and a very imposing stained glass window. The church and graveyard stand a metre higher than the road, retained behind a low wall of the same red-brown ironstone. The church is seen framed by bushes and large trees in the middle nearground. The sky is mostly of high, light, clouds with patches of blue.

History of Middle Rasen

Early Mentions

Middle Rasen is a very old place. It was first mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086. This book was like a big survey of England ordered by William the Conqueror. At that time, it was hard to tell Middle Rasen apart from nearby West Rasen and Market Rasen. The Domesday Book mentioned "Rasen" ten times in total. It said there were 144 households in the whole area.

How the Village Grew

Today's Middle Rasen was formed when two older villages joined together. These were called Middle Rasen Drax and Middle Rasen Tupholme.

Village Churches

Middle Rasen has had two main churches over time. One church was called St Paul Middle Rasen Drax. It got part of its name from a place called Drax Priory in Yorkshire. In 1846, St Paul's Church had a main hall (nave), a special area for the altar (chancel), and a tower. This church was taken down in 1860. Some of its stone was used to help fix up the other church, St Peter.

St Peter's Church is very old, dating back to the 12th century. That's over 800 years ago! It has been changed and added to over the years. In 1861, it had a big update by architects Pearson Bellamy and John Spence Hardy. This church is now a Grade II* listed building, which means it's a very important historic building.

In 1885, a book called Kelly's Directory described Middle Rasen. It noted that the village had several different Methodist churches. These included Wesleyan, Primitive Methodist, and Reformed Wesleyan chapels.

Life and Work in the Past

The land around Middle Rasen was made of sand and clay. Farmers grew crops like wheat, barley, and turnips. They also used the land for grazing animals. In 1881, 928 people lived in the parish.

The directory listed many jobs people had. There were 17 farmers, and some of them had other jobs too. For example, one farmer was also a miller, and another bought and sold cattle. Other jobs included a blacksmith, a grocer, a shopkeeper, and a wheelwright. There was also a shoemaker who ran the post office!

Mills and Schools

Middle Rasen once had a tall windmill. It was built in 1827 to grind cereal grains. It stopped working in 1925 and is now used for storage. There was also an older watermill from the late 1700s. Its remaining wheelhouse is also a Grade II listed building.

Middle Rasen Primary School was built in 1875. It replaced an older charity school that started because of a gift from John Wilkinson, who died in 1720. The charity still helps support the school today.

Community Life

Churches and Faith

The main church in Middle Rasen is part of a group of churches called The Middle Rasen Group. After St Paul's Church was taken down, St Peter's Church took on both names. It is now known as Drax St Peter & St Paul. The church has a modern hall that the village uses for events. For the Millennium celebration, a new clock and three new bells were added to the church.

The Middle Rasen Methodist church has a chapel on Gainsborough Road. The Anglican and Methodist churches sometimes hold services together. They even have joint services at a former RAF base about 4 miles (6.4 km) away.

Clubs and Activities

Middle Rasen has many fun clubs and groups. The Bowling club has a green on Church Street where people can play. There's also a Cricket Club for sports fans. If you like gardening, you might enjoy the Horticultural Society. These clubs help make Middle Rasen a lively place to live!
