He was also fifth in assists (348) and tenth in points (1,411). In his final year, he was named to the All-Atlantic 10 Conference first team.

Professional Basketball Journey
Starting in Europe
Mike James was not chosen by an NBA team in the 1998 draft. So, he started his professional basketball career in Europe. He played several successful seasons with teams in France and Austria. In 2011, after playing in the NBA, James returned to Europe and signed with Aliağa Petkim in Turkey.
NBA Career Highlights
James began his NBA journey when he joined the Miami Heat in the 2001–02 season. Over his career, he played for 11 different NBA teams. These included the Boston Celtics, Detroit Pistons, Milwaukee Bucks, Houston Rockets, Toronto Raptors, Minnesota Timberwolves, New Orleans Hornets, Washington Wizards, Chicago Bulls, and Dallas Mavericks. He averaged 10.0 points per game throughout his NBA career.
Winning with the Detroit Pistons
Mike James was part of the amazing Detroit Pistons team that won the NBA championship in 2004. He was a key reserve player. He and fellow guard Lindsey Hunter were known for their tough defense. Their teammate Rasheed Wallace even nicknamed them the "Pit Bulls" because of how aggressive they were on defense!
Starring for the Toronto Raptors
During the 2005–06 season, James became a starter for the Toronto Raptors. This was his best season ever! He averaged 20.3 points, 5.8 assists, and 3.3 rebounds per game. He also shot very well, making 47% of his shots overall and 44.2% from three-point range.
Even though he was a great shooter, some people questioned his playmaking and defense. However, he had some incredible games. On April 11, 2006, he became the first Raptors player to score 30 or more points in four games in a row. He also scored a career-high 39 points in a game against the Detroit Pistons that season.
Playing for the Minnesota Timberwolves
After his fantastic season with the Raptors, Mike James was a highly sought-after player. On July 11, 2006, he signed a four-year contract worth $23.5 million with the Minnesota Timberwolves. However, his time with the Timberwolves was not as successful. His playing time dropped, and his performance was not as strong as his previous year.
Later NBA Teams
Mike James continued to move between teams in the NBA. In 2007, he was traded to the Houston Rockets. Then, in 2008, he was traded again to the New Orleans Hornets. Later that year, he was part of a three-team trade that sent him to the Washington Wizards.
After leaving the Wizards in 2010, James played in the NBA Development League (now G-League). He had a few more short stints in the NBA. He played for the Chicago Bulls in 2012 and 2014, and the Dallas Mavericks in 2013.
Post-NBA Career
After his NBA career, Mike James returned to the Texas Legends of the D-League. In January 2015, he achieved a "triple-double" for the Legends. This means he had double-digit numbers in three categories: 21 points, 14 assists, and 10 rebounds in one game!
