Mikhail Aleshin's Racing Journey
Mikhail Aleshin started his racing career in karting from 1996 to 2000. Since 2001, he has raced in many international open wheel series. These are races where the wheels are outside the car's main body.
On April 14, 2007, he made history. He became the first Russian driver to win a big international single-seater race. This win happened at Monza in the Formula Renault 3.5 Series. Later that year, he also raced in the 2007 GP2 Series season, becoming the second Russian to do so. He continued in Formula Renault 3.5 in 2008.
In 2009, Aleshin joined the new FIA Formula Two Championship. He finished third overall in the championship. He also won a race at Oschersleben.
Winning the Formula Renault 3.5 Series
Aleshin returned to Formula Renault 3.5 for the 2010 season. He raced for the Carlin team. He won three races that season. Because of his great performance, he became the champion of the series.
After this big win, he got to test a Renault F1 car. This test was for young drivers in Abu Dhabi. He hoped to race in Formula One in 2011, but it did not happen.
Challenges in GP2 Series
In 2011, Aleshin continued with Carlin in the 2011 GP2 Series and 2011 GP2 Asia Series. This was Carlin's first time in this series. Aleshin faced many technical problems in the Asia series. He ended up last in the championship.
He then announced he did not have enough money to race in the main GP2 series. He planned to move to a different championship. However, he got a last-minute deal to race for Carlin in GP2. But bad luck struck again. He crashed during qualifying for the first race in Turkey. He hurt both his hands and could not race. He came back for the next race, but then his funding ran out again. He returned for a few more races later in the season. Overall, it was a tough year for him.
IndyCar Racing and a Big Accident
In 2014, Mikhail Aleshin started racing in the IndyCar Series with Schmidt Peterson Motorsports. This was a big step, as IndyCar is a top racing series in North America.
The Fontana Crash Incident
During the final race of the 2014 IndyCar season at Fontana, Aleshin had a serious accident. He was practicing his race car on the track. The Fontana track is very fast, with cars going over 200 miles per hour.
Aleshin's car was driving low on the track. It then hit the edge of the track, which made the car unstable. His car spun out of control. Another driver, Charlie Kimball, was racing nearby. Kimball could not avoid Aleshin's spinning car and crashed into it. Both cars then hit the outside wall. Aleshin's car went up and over Kimball's car. It then hit the safety fence, spinning against it. The car fell back onto the track, and parts of it were scattered everywhere. A large part of the safety fence was also torn down.
Kimball was able to get out of his car without injuries. Aleshin, however, was taken to the hospital. He had a concussion, broken ribs, a broken collarbone, and chest injuries. He needed time to recover from these injuries.
