Mililani was built on land that used to be pineapple fields. A company called Castle & Cooke started planning this new town in 1958. Their idea was to create a "satellite city." This means it would be a new, affordable community near a bigger city (Honolulu) to help with the need for more homes on Oʻahu. They planned for it to eventually be home to 75,000 people. The first homes in Mililani were ready for sale on June 23, 1968.

In 1976, a major highway called Interstate H-2 opened. This highway made it much faster to travel from Mililani to Honolulu. In 1986, Mililani was recognized as an All-America City. This award was given because the community worked together to clean up their drinking water. Mililani is the only place in Hawaiʻi to ever receive this special award.

A newer part of Mililani, called Mililani Mauka, began construction on April 6, 1990. It is located east of the H-2 highway and is a more modern area. The first families moved into Mauka in 1992.

In 2003, Mililani was chosen to be the first place in Honolulu to try out a new recycling program where people could leave their recycling bins at the curb. In 2005, Money magazine named Mililani as one of the best places to live in the United States. The next year, in 2006, a first-grade teacher from Mililani ʻIke Elementary School, Phyllis Nakama-Kawamoto, was named Hawaiʻi's American Star of Teaching. This award came from the U.S. Department of Education.
