Early Life and Skills
Mills Olcott Burnham was born on September 8, 1817, in Vermont. He grew up in Troy, New York. As a young man, he learned how to be a gunsmith. He trained at the Watervliet Government Arsenal.
Moving to Florida
In 1837, Mills moved to Florida for health reasons. In August 1839, his wife and two children joined him. They first settled near Jacksonville.
Settling in Susanna
Later, Mills claimed land in an area called Susanna. This place is now known as Ankona, near Fort Pierce. He started growing pineapples there. This crop later became very important for the region.
In 1847, Mills Burnham became the first sheriff of St. Lucia County. To earn more money, he bought a boat named "The Josephine." He used it to catch green sea turtles. He sold these turtles in Charleston. He was known for taking good care of his cargo. Mills also raised sheep.
Political Role
Mills Burnham was a member of the Florida House of Representatives. He served in this important government role from 1847 to 1851.
In August 1849, due to conflicts with native groups, the Burnhams and other settlers moved to St. Augustine for safety. In 1853, Mills and his family, which now included five daughters, moved to Canaveral.
Lighthouse Keeper
Mills Burnham became the keeper of the Cape Canaveral Light in 1853. He worked as the lighthouse keeper for 30 years. He helped guide ships safely along the coast.
Mills Olcott Burnham passed away on April 17, 1886, at the age of 68.
