Milton J. Barney (born December 23, 1963) is a former American football player. He was a wide receiver, which is a player who catches passes. Milton played for the Atlanta Falcons in the National Football League (NFL). He also played college football at Alcorn State University. Later, he joined the New Orleans Night in the Arena Football League (AFL).

Early Life and High School Years

Milton J. Barney was born on December 23, 1963. He grew up and went to Gulfport High School in Gulfport, Mississippi.

College Football Career

Milton Barney was a key player for the Alcorn State Braves football team. He played for them from 1983 to 1986. In 1984, he caught 33 passes for 622 yards and scored seven touchdowns. This great performance earned him the "Newcomer of the Year" award in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC).

The 1984 Alcorn State Braves team was very successful. They were even named black college national champions that year. In 1985, Milton continued to shine, catching 46 passes for 686 yards and five touchdowns. He was recognized as a second-team All-SWAC player. During his senior year in 1986, he had 48 catches for 719 yards and five touchdowns. This earned him a spot on the first-team All-SWAC list.

Professional Football Journey

After college, Milton Barney was not chosen in the 1987 NFL draft. However, he signed with the Atlanta Falcons on May 6, 1987. He was released from the team on September 7.

Playing for the Atlanta Falcons

Milton got another chance with the Falcons during the 1987 NFL players strike. He rejoined the team on September 23. He started in all three games the Falcons played during the strike. In these games, he caught ten passes for 175 yards and scored two touchdowns. He also returned five punts for 28 yards. After the strike ended, he was released by the Falcons on October 19.

Time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers

On July 7, 1988, Milton Barney signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. However, he left the team on August 1, 1988, due to an ankle injury. He signed with the Buccaneers again on February 16, 1989, but was released later that year.

Success in the Arena Football League

In 1991, Milton Barney played for the New Orleans Night in the Arena Football League (AFL). The AFL had special "ironman rules," meaning players often played both offense and defense. Milton was a wide receiver and a defensive back.

He played in nine games and had a fantastic season. He caught 37 passes for 550 yards and scored eight touchdowns. He also ran the ball 11 times for 36 yards and two touchdowns. On defense, he made 37 solo tackles and had two interceptions. For his amazing performance, he won the AFL Ironman of the Year award. He was also named to the first-team All-Arena list for 1991.
