Milton Casper Elstner (born in 1848, died in 1912) was an American lawyer. He was also a soldier who fought for the Confederate States. Milton was born in Grant County, Kentucky. He became very important in the legal field. He served as a United States Attorney three separate times. This job meant he represented the U.S. government in court. He worked under five different presidents during his career.
Early Life and War Service
Milton was born to W. H. and Anna S. (Carter) Elstner. Both of his parents were from Kentucky. In 1859, when Milton was about 11 years old, his family moved to Louisiana. They settled in a place called Caddo Parish.
After a few years, they moved to Arkansas. But in 1863, they returned to Louisiana. In 1865, the American Civil War was ending. Milton, at 17, joined the Third Arkansas Regiment. He was with generals Ben McCullough and McIntosh. They were killed at the Battle of Elk Horn. This was a big fight between armies led by Sigel and Earl Van Dorn. During his time in the army, Milton held the rank of major and quartermaster. A quartermaster is someone who manages supplies for the army.
Becoming a Lawyer
Milton went to college at the University of Kentucky. He finished his studies there in 1872. He also graduated from the law school at the same university. This meant he could become a lawyer.
First, he was allowed to practice law in Kentucky. Later that same year, he was also allowed to practice law in Shreveport, Louisiana. By 1874, he had started his own law practice.
Serving as United States Attorney
Milton Elstner was a very skilled lawyer. He was known for his strong and convincing speeches. He earned his good reputation through hard work and lots of study. He also gained experience by actually working on many cases.
He was chosen to be the United States Attorney for the western part of Louisiana. He first held this important job during the time of President Arthur. In July 1889, he was appointed to the same position again. He did his job so well that people praised him. He was appointed a third time in 1898. He continued to serve as United States Attorney until 1910. This shows how much trust different presidents had in his abilities.
