Milton Murray Holland (born August 1, 1844 – died May 15, 1910) was a brave soldier during the American Civil War. He fought for the Union Army. He received America's highest military award, the Medal of Honor. This award was given for his amazing actions at the Battle of Chaffin's Farm.
Milton Holland: A Civil War Hero
Milton Holland was born in Texas. His mother, Matilda, was an enslaved African-American woman. He grew up and later joined the Army from Athens, Ohio.
Joining the Fight
Milton Holland played a big part in forming a new army unit. He helped recruit 149 young Black men. They joined the Union Army at the Athens County Fairgrounds. This group became Company C of the 5th United States Colored Infantry Regiment. This regiment was made up of African American soldiers.
Milton Holland served as a Sergeant Major. This was a special leadership role. His unit, the 5th U.S. Colored Infantry, fought in many battles.
Bravery at Chaffin's Farm
On September 29, 1864, Milton Holland's unit fought in the Battle of Chaffin's Farm. This important battle took place in Virginia. Milton Holland showed incredible courage during this fight.
His actions helped his unit succeed. For his bravery, he was awarded the Medal of Honor. He received this special medal on April 6, 1865. This was just three days before the Civil War ended.
After the War
Milton Holland left the army in September 1865. He had served his country with honor. He later married Virginia W. Dickey.
Milton Holland passed away on May 15, 1910. He was 65 years old. He died from a heart attack. He was buried in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington County, Virginia. This cemetery is a special place for many American heroes.
