Miradero is a lively area, or "barrio," located in the beautiful municipality of Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico. In 2010, about 15,521 people called Miradero home. It's famous for a charming fishing village called Joyuda, which is known for its amazing seafood restaurants.
What's Special About Miradero?
Miradero has a cool public square called the Plaza del Pescador, which means "Fisherman's Square." This square is where the yearly Festival del Pescao (Fish Festival) takes place. It's a fun event celebrating local seafood!
Joyuda, a fishing village within Miradero, is famous for its many seafood restaurants. These restaurants are found along Puerto Rico Highway 102, a road that runs along the coast. In 2017, Joyuda faced a big challenge when Hurricane María hit Puerto Rico.
You can also find a campus of the Ana G. Méndez University in Miradero. This university helps students learn and grow.
A Look Back: Miradero's History
After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened under the rules of the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became an unincorporated territory of the United States.
In 1899, the United States Department of War counted the people in Puerto Rico. They found that Miradero barrio had a population of 2,011 people back then. The population has grown a lot since then!
