What Happens in the Story?
Miss Flora Spider is very happy with her husband, Holley. But she gets a bit worried when five eggs hatch on the same day! She's nervous about becoming a mother. This is because she didn't have her own mom around when she was little. Luckily, her adoptive mother, Betty Beetle, tells her not to worry. When the five new spiderlings hatch, the whole family is super excited.
Squirt's Big Adventure
Years pass, and the spider kids grow up. One day, the family finds a special egg and decorates it. Squirt, one of the young spiders, thinks the egg's mother might be looking for it. So, he decides to return it. As he travels through the forest, he meets three other young bugs. They are Dragon the dragonfly, Shimmer the jewel beetle, and Bounce the bedbug.
Squirt explains that he is looking for the egg's mother. Bounce shares that they don't have parents either. Dragon adds that they are still searching for theirs. Shimmer suggests they all go together and help Squirt.
A Mean Spider and a Snowstorm
Suddenly, Spiderus appears. He is a mean spider who was upset when Miss Spider chose Holley instead of him. Spiderus tries to take the egg. But the kids work together and manage to scare him away! Meanwhile, Miss Spider realizes Squirt is missing. She worries a lot. She and Holley decide to go look for him. With a little help from Spiderus, they find out where Squirt is headed.
Snow begins to fall. The kids find a cozy home with Stinky, a stink bug. They stay there until morning to keep warm. By the time the kids leave, the three adult spiders arrive. Spiderus meets a female spider named Spindella and falls in love!
Family and New Friends
The kids finally reach a barn. There, they find a hen, who is the mother of the egg! The hen gets a bit protective. Just as Squirt is in a tricky spot, Miss Spider and Holley arrive and save him.
The egg hatches, and the baby chick is reunited with its mother. Squirt then introduces his new friends to his parents. Miss Spider decides to adopt Dragon, Shimmer, and Bounce. She says that eight is a perfect number for their family! Everyone is overjoyed, and they all return home together. As all the kids sleep, Miss Spider understands something important. It doesn't matter what kind of bugs they are. What truly matters is that they are all family.
The story ends with Squirt seemingly missing again. But he is soon found outside, flying happily on his web! The other kids wake up and run outside to play. The adults watch them, then join in the fun, shouting, "Bugs Away!"
