Mitsuo Matayoshi (又吉 光雄, Matayoshi Mitsuo, February 5, 1944 – July 20, 2018) was a Japanese political activist. He was also known as Jesus Matayoshi (又吉 イエス, Matayoshi Iesu). He became famous for running in many elections but never winning. This is called being a perennial candidate. He was the leader and founder of the World Economic Community Party (世界経済共同体党 (Sekai Keizai Kyōdōtai-tō)).
Matayoshi was born in Ginowan, Okinawa on February 5, 1944. He graduated from Chuo University in Tokyo in 1968. After college, he moved back to Okinawa and ran a juku, which is a private school.
He trained to be a Protestant preacher. Through his religious studies, he developed his own unique ideas about Christianity. In 1997, he started the World Economic Community Party. This political party was based on his belief that he was God. His ideas mixed religious beliefs with political goals. He passed away from an illness on July 20, 2018.
Matayoshi's Political Ideas
Mitsuo Matayoshi had a very specific plan for how he would lead. He believed he would act as Christ to bring about a final judgment, but within the current political system.
His first step was to become the Prime Minister of Japan. After that, he planned to change Japanese society. He then hoped to be offered the job of Secretary-General of the United Nations. Matayoshi wanted to rule the entire world with both religious and political power.
He also wanted to change the world's economy. He believed every country should be able to support itself, mainly through farming. He thought it was wrong for people to leave their home country. Because of this, he did not like permanent residency or naturalization for foreigners. He wanted people who were not ethnically Japanese to return to their family's original homeland, even if they were born in Japan. He also wanted the United States to remove its army from all overseas locations, including Okinawa.
Elections and Campaigns
Matayoshi ran as a candidate in many elections from 1997 to 2017. However, he never won any of them.
Like many Japanese politicians, he campaigned using a small mini-van. This van was fitted with very large loudspeakers. But unlike most, he would shout his campaign slogans in a special, loud voice. This style was inspired by traditional Japanese kabuki theater.
