The Moana: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack is the music album for the 2016 Disney animated movie Moana. Walt Disney Records released the soundtrack on November 19, 2016. It includes songs written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Mark Mancina, and Opetaia Foa'i. The lyrics are in English, Samoan, Tokelauan, and Tuvaluan. A special two-disc version also has the movie's background music, which Mancina composed. This deluxe edition also features demo songs, extra tracks, and karaoke versions. Two popular songs from the album were released as singles.

The album started at number 16 on the Billboard 200 chart and later reached number 2. It was almost number one, but Starboy by The Weeknd stayed at the top. The song "How Far I'll Go" was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song and an Academy Award for Best Original Song.

Making the Music: How the Soundtrack Was Recorded

For the Moana soundtrack, Disney wanted to mix traditional South Pacific sounds with modern pop and Broadway styles. This led them to hire Broadway writer and composer Lin-Manuel Miranda, composer Mark Mancina, and Tokelauan singer-songwriter Opetaia Foa'i.

Working Together on the Songs

The first song they finished was "We Know the Way." Foa'i started working on it after his first meeting with Disney in December 2013. The three artists worked together in New Zealand and Los Angeles. At the same time, Miranda was also busy with his Broadway musical Hamilton. He even got some Hamilton stars like Phillipa Soo, Christopher Jackson, and Renée Elise Goldsberry to help record early versions of his songs.

Sounds and Instruments Used

The songs feature Te Vaka, a vocal group from New Zealand led by Foa'i, and a choir from Fiji. The soundtrack has seven new songs, two repeated versions, and two songs played during the end credits. Mancina created the background music for the movie and produced all the songs. The music uses guitars and strings, along with vocals in Polynesian languages. It also includes Polynesian drums, woodwind instruments made from bamboo, and traditional hide-covered Tyka drums.

Miranda shared that the song "Shiny" was inspired by a tribute to David Bowie by the Flight of the Conchords. He listened to Bowie's songs a lot after the singer passed away in January 2016.

How Well the Soundtrack Sold

The song "How Far I'll Go" is sung by actress Auliʻi Cravalho in the movie. A different version, sung by Canadian artist Alessia Cara, plays during the end credits. A music video for Alessia Cara's version came out on November 3, 2016. This song reached number 88 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Other singers, like Lira from South Africa and Janella Salvador from the Philippines, recorded their own English versions for their countries. Indonesian singer Maudy Ayunda and Malaysian singer Ayda Jebat recorded versions in their own languages.

Dwayne Johnson sings "You're Welcome" in the movie. Lin-Manuel Miranda and Jordan Fisher sing a duet version of "You're Welcome" for the end credits. Dwayne Johnson's version of "You're Welcome" reached number 83 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album also features Jemaine Clement, who is the voice of the crab character Tamatoa.

By April 2017, the album had sold over 509,000 copies in the United States. It was one of the top-selling soundtracks that year. Overall, Moana sold 709,000 copies and was the fifth best-selling album in the country that year.

Awards and Nominations

"How Far I'll Go" was nominated for Best Original Song at the 74th Golden Globe Awards. It also received a nomination for Best Original Song at the 89th Academy Awards.
