Mogo is a small, historic town located on the South Coast of New South Wales, Australia. It has a postcode of 2536. The town is managed by the Eurobodalla Shire council. You can find Mogo on the Princes Highway, which is also known as Highway 1. It's south of Batemans Bay and north of Moruya. In 2021, about 249 people lived in Mogo.

Mogo: A Town with a Golden Past

Mogo was first settled in 1851. This happened during the exciting time of the Australian gold rushes, after gold was discovered nearby. The last gold mine in the Mogo area, called Bimbimbie, closed in 1984.

For a while, Mogo was a quiet town along the highway. But in the 1990s, it became popular again. More and more people started visiting the area. Now, Mogo has many shops that tourists love. These include cafes, art galleries, pottery shops, and furniture stores. Mogo is also an important place for the Aboriginal people who live in the area.

Discover Mogo Wildlife Park

One of the most exciting places in Mogo is the Mogo Wildlife Park. This is a private zoo that works hard to protect animals. It specializes in special programs to help breed animals that are in danger of disappearing forever.

Even though it's smaller than big city zoos, Mogo Wildlife Park is home to many amazing animals. You can see exotic species like the red panda and the snow leopard. In 1999, the park successfully bred snow leopards, which was a big achievement! The animals at Mogo Wildlife Park often change. This is because the park works with other zoos in Australia.

Art and Creativity in Mogo

Mogo is a lively place for art. It has become one of the main centers for local art and craftwork. You can find more art galleries here than in bigger nearby towns like Batemans Bay and Moruya. People travel from places like Canberra and other parts of New South Wales just to see and buy the unique art and crafts.

Mogo has a small public primary school called Mogo Public School. It serves the children from Mogo and the areas around it. About 70 students attend this school. After primary school, most students go to public high schools like Batemans Bay High School or Moruya High School. Some also attend private high schools such as Carroll College and St. Peters Anglican College, both located in nearby Broulee.

Facing Challenges

Mogo was affected by the big 2019–20 Australian bushfire season. During these fires, one of the town's popular attractions, the Mogo Gold Rush, was unfortunately burned down. Many other shops and businesses were also damaged or destroyed. This included Mill's Bookshop, which was also the home of the shop's owner.
