Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani (born November 1, 1980) is a top Qatari diplomat, economist, and politician. He has been the Prime Minister of Qatar since March 7, 2023. He also serves as the Minister of Foreign Affairs since 2016.
Besides these roles, he has been the Chairman of the Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) since 2014. He is also a member of Qatar's Supreme Council for Economic Affairs and Investments (SCEAI). Before becoming Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed was the Deputy Prime Minister from 2017 to 2023. He also led the Qatar Investment Authority from 2018 to 2023.

Early Life and Education
Sheikh Mohammed was born and grew up in Doha, Qatar. He is a member of the House of Thani, which is the royal family of Qatar. He studied at Qatar University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in economics and business administration in 2003.
Career Highlights
Early in his career, Sheikh Mohammed worked as an economic researcher for the Ruling Family Council starting in 2003. From 2005 to 2009, he was the Director of Economic Affairs there.
In 2009, Sheikh Mohammed became the Director of the Department of Public and Private Sectors Partnership at the Ministry of Business and Trade. During this time, he helped start “Enterprise Qatar.” This organization helps small and medium-sized businesses with money and advice.
From 2010 to 2011, he worked as Secretary to the Personal Representative of the Father Emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. In the same year, he became the head of the Qatar Mining Company's Board of Directors.
In 2011, Sheikh Mohammed also became the head of the committee for developing small and medium-sized businesses. He also led the Board of Directors of Aspire – Katara Investment Company.
In 2013, Sheikh Mohammed joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He became the Assistant Foreign Minister for International Cooperation Affairs. His work focused on working with other countries, guiding Qatar's foreign aid, and using international cooperation plans. These plans were based on the Qatar National Vision 2030, which is a plan for Qatar's future.
Becoming Prime Minister



On March 7, 2023, Sheikh Mohammed was appointed as the Prime Minister of Qatar. This happened as part of a change in the government.
As Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed advises the Emir, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, on how to set up government ministries. He also helps the Emir with his duties. Sheikh Mohammed leads meetings of the Council of Ministers. He manages discussions and makes sure different government departments work well together. This helps all parts of the government work as one team.
Leading Foreign Policy
As Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Mohammed is in charge of Qatar's foreign policy. This means he plans and carries out how Qatar deals with other countries. He works to keep and improve Qatar's relationships with countries around the world. He also leads efforts to help solve problems between countries and promote peace.
In October 2023, a conflict started between Hamas and Israel. Sheikh Mohammed quickly began talks to help free people held by both sides. Qatar, working with the United States, made good progress in these talks. Qatar played a key role in helping American and Australian people leave Israel and Gaza.
On November 1, 2023, Qatar helped make an agreement between Egypt, Israel, and Hamas. This agreement, also with the U.S., allowed people to leave Gaza. Sheikh Mohammed met with CIA Director William J. Burns and Mossad head David Barnea in Qatar in November. They helped extend a ceasefire and arranged for more than 100 Israeli people to be exchanged for 240 Palestinian prisoners. Sheikh Mohammed spoke out against the bombing in Gaza. He asked for an international investigation into what he called "Israeli crimes in Gaza."
In January 2024, Sheikh Mohammed met with U.S. officials in Washington, D.C., to continue ceasefire talks. He also welcomed U.S. Secretary Antony Blinken to Doha in February 2024. With Qatar and Egypt helping, Hamas suggested a deal. This deal would include freeing all Israeli people in Gaza and hundreds of Palestinians in Israeli prisons, and ending the conflict. However, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu rejected this idea in February 2024.
Many world leaders, like Antony Blinken, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, U.S. President Joe Biden, and the EU's foreign affairs representative Josep Borrell, praised Sheikh Mohammed's efforts to help people.
In 2024, TIME magazine named Sheikh Mohammed one of the "100 Most Influential People" in the world. The magazine recognized his important role in the talks between Hamas and Israel.
In January 2025, Sheikh Mohammed helped with talks that led to a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. Qatari officials hosted these talks in Doha. The agreement included a prisoner exchange and ways to help people in the region.
In February 2025, Sheikh Mohammed visited Beirut, Lebanon. He confirmed Qatar's support for Lebanon. During his visit, he met with Lebanese leaders. He promised that Qatar would help rebuild Lebanon, especially in the southern area affected by the recent conflict.
Leading the Qatar Fund for Development
As Chairman of the Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD), Sheikh Mohammed guides the fund's work. He has helped it grow to support over 70 countries, especially in the Middle East, Asia, and Africa.
Sheikh Mohammed helps support global development through the fund's long-term plan. This plan focuses on education, health, helping people earn money, and dealing with climate change. This plan follows the Qatar National Vision 2030 and matches the UN Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs).
He has supported many projects through the Fund. These include the “Qatar Creates Vision” in India and Bangladesh, and the "Quest" project for educating Syrian refugees. He also supported "Business Incubator Laboratories" with the United Nations Development Program.
Sheikh Mohammed's leadership has helped Qatar build stronger ties with countries that receive aid. It has also boosted Qatar's efforts to work with other nations globally.
Awards and Honours
Paraguay Honour
On May 24, 2023, the President of Paraguay, Mario Abdo Benítez, gave Sheikh Mohammed the National Order of Merit. This award recognized Sheikh Mohammed's role in making relations between Qatar and Paraguay stronger.
United States Honour
On January 19, 2021, the United States Department of Defense gave Sheikh Mohammed the Department of Defense Medal for Distinguished Public Service. This is one of the highest awards the U.S. gives to officials. This award recognized his diplomatic work to strengthen ties between Qatar and the United States. It also honored his efforts to support peace in Afghanistan, promote stability in the Middle East, and solve the Gulf Crisis through diplomacy.
Ireland Honour
Sheikh Mohammed received the Tipperary International Peace Award in 2024. He will officially receive the award in a ceremony in Tipperary Town on July 1, 2025.
