Moise Jacob Safra was a Brazilian businessman. He was also a kind person who helped others, known as a philanthropist. Moise was born on April 5, 1934, and passed away on June 15, 2014. He came from a family with Syrian roots. With his brothers, Edmond and Joseph Safra, he helped start a big bank called Banco Safra.

Moise's Early Life and Family Roots

Moise Safra was born in Beirut, Lebanon, on April 5, 1934. His family had a long history in banking. They were Sephardic Jewish and originally came from Aleppo, a city in modern Syria. Moise's father was named Jacob Safra.

The Safra family's banking story began a long time ago. They helped with trade using caravans between cities like Alexandria and Constantinople. This was during the time of the Ottoman Empire.

After the First World War, Moise's family moved from Aleppo to Beirut. Beirut already had a strong Jewish community. Later, in 1952, the Safra family decided to move to Brazil.

In 1955, Moise's older brother, Edmond Safra, and their father, Jacob, started working in Brazil. They helped finance trade in São Paulo.

Moise's Banking Career

Moise Safra settled in Brazil and became a Brazilian citizen. He worked with his brothers, Edmond and Joseph Safra. Together, they founded Banco Safra. This bank became a very important financial institution.

Besides his work in banking, Moise Safra was also known for his philanthropy. This means he gave a lot of money and time to help good causes. He supported many Jewish charities and projects.

Moise's Passing

Moise Safra passed away on June 14, 2014. He was 80 years old. Reports said he died from heart failure. He was buried in the Cemitério Israelita do Butantã [pt] in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Moise was survived by his wife, Chella Cohen Safra. They had five children together. Their names are Jacob Moise Safra, Azuri "Ezra" Moise Safra, Edmundo "Edmond" Moise Safra, Esther Safra Szajman, and Olga Safra.
