Sylvester "Molly" McGee (born August 26, 1952 – died July 18, 1994) was an American running back in American football. He was known as "Molly" and played for several teams during his career. He played in the National Football League (NFL) for the Atlanta Falcons.
Molly McGee was picked by the Falcons in the 16th round of the 1974 NFL Draft. Before turning pro, he played college football at the University of Rhode Island. He also played for other teams like the Charlotte Hornets, Ottawa Rough Riders, and Saskatchewan Roughriders.
Early Life and High School Sports
Molly McGee grew up in Thiells, New York. He was a talented athlete at North Rockland High School. He played both high school football and baseball very well.
In baseball, he was a top player. He was named All-County three times as a center fielder. In his junior year, he made the Daily News All-Star team. For football, he was a two-time All-Rockland running back. He also made the Daily News All-Star team and was second-team All-New York State. Molly McGee finished high school in 1970. Later, in 1986, he was honored in the Rockland County Sports Hall of Fame.
College Football Career
Molly McGee received an athletic scholarship to play for the Rhode Island Rams. He was a star player during his time there. He was named a first-team All-Yankee Conference running back three times.
In 1972, he was also chosen as a first-team All-East tailback. His skills were so impressive that in 1980, he was voted onto the University of Rhode Island's team of the decade.
Professional Football Journey
Molly McGee started his professional career when the Atlanta Falcons drafted him. This happened in the 16th round of the 1974 NFL Draft. He played in 10 games for the Falcons during the 1974 season.
In 1975, the Falcons released him after he got a shoulder injury. Later that year, McGee joined the Charlotte Hornets in the World Football League. However, that league stopped playing games in the middle of the season.
McGee then moved to the Canadian Football League (CFL). He played for the Ottawa Rough Riders from 1975 to 1976. In 1976, he was traded to the Saskatchewan Roughriders. He became a top player there. In 1978, he led the CFL in receiving with 68 catches. His professional career ended in 1980 because of a serious knee injury.
