Thiells is a small community in Rockland County, New York, United States. It's known as a hamlet and a census-designated place (CDP). A CDP is a special area defined by the U.S. Census Bureau for collecting population data.
In the 1850s, Thiells was called Thiell's Corner. During the American Revolutionary War, it was known as Haverstraw Forge. This was an important spot where General "Mad" Anthony Wayne and his 1,350 Continental Army soldiers could keep an eye on the nearby area of Stony Point.
Thiells is located north of Mount Ivy, east of Pomona, south of Tomkins Cove, and west of Garnerville. In 2020, about 5,240 people lived there.

The community is situated along U.S. Route 202. This road connects it between the Palisades Interstate Parkway and U.S. Route 9W. Thiells is also located west of the famous Hudson River.

Thiells United Methodist Church History
The Thiells United Methodist Church, located on Rosman Road, celebrated its 225th anniversary in 2009. This church started as a mission to American Indians. It was officially recognized by the City Road Chapel in London in 1784.
A small building for the church was built on land set aside by John Thiell. This original building was expanded over time. Sadly, it was destroyed in a fire in 1973. However, the community quickly rebuilt the church on the very same spot.
David B. Roche Volunteer Fire Company
In 2010, the David B. Roche Volunteer Fire Company celebrated its 50th anniversary. This fire company has a strong connection to the community.
On September 11, 2001, the company faced a great loss. John Coughlin, a New York police officer and a volunteer with the Thiells fire company, died at the World Trade Center. His name is still honored on the company's roster.

Paul Piperato
Paul Piperato (June 19, 1958 - May 6, 2020) was a notable person from Thiells. He served Rockland County for 30 years. For 15 of those years, he was the County Clerk.
In honor of his hard work and dedication to the residents of Rockland County, the Haverstraw Bay Park in West Haverstraw, New York was renamed Paul Piperato Haverstraw Bay Park.
