Molly Sims was born to Jim and Dottie Sims on May 25, 1973. She grew up in Mayfield, Kentucky, and later moved to Murray, Kentucky. This move happened because her father's book company was located in Murray. Molly has an older brother.
After finishing Murray High School in 1991, Sims went to Vanderbilt University. She planned to study political science. However, in 1993, when she was 19, she decided to leave college. She wanted to focus on a career in modeling instead. While at Vanderbilt, she was part of the Delta Delta Delta sorority.

Molly Sims started her modeling journey by sending her photos to different agencies. She was then signed by Next Models Management in New York City.
She appeared on the cover of Vogue Spain in April 1997 and Vogue Paris in September 1999. In 2001, Sims became a spokesperson for Old Navy. She was in their advertisements, which were known for the phrase "You gotta get this look!" She also walked in the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in 2001.
