A Look Back: Mona Vale's History
The local Aboriginal people called this area "Bongin Bongin." The first land grants in the Pittwater area happened in April 1813. The parts that make up Mona Vale today were first surveyed in May 1814. These lands were given to Robert Campbell. His land was about 700 acres (2.8 square kilometres) and stretched north to Newport beach.
People say that Campbell named the area "Mona Vale" after a town in Scotland. However, no one knows for sure where this Scottish town was.
The Pittwater Council used to have its main offices here. Later, the Pittwater Council joined with the Warringah and Manly councils. Together, they formed the new Northern Beaches Council.
