Monette is a city located in Craighead County, Arkansas, in the United States. It is part of an area in Northeast Arkansas called Buffalo Island. In 2020, the city had a population of 1,506 people.

History of Monette
Monette began as a settlement in 1898. This happened when the Jonesboro, Lake City and Eastern Railroad built its tracks past an older town called Stottsville. People and businesses from Stottsville decided to move closer to the new railroad.
The very first train arrived in Monette on August 19, 1898. Just two years later, on July 3, 1900, Monette officially became an incorporated city.
Tornado Impact in 2021
On December 10, 2021, a very strong tornado hit Monette. This tornado was part of a larger series of tornadoes. Sadly, one person died at a nursing home on the north side of town.
Geography of Monette
Monette is located in the eastern part of Craighead County. The city covers about 14.67 square kilometers (5.66 square miles) of land. Only a very small part, about 0.02 square kilometers (0.01 square miles), is water.
Natural Environment
Monette is in an area known as the St. Francis Lowlands. This region is mostly flat and used for farming today. You can still see unique land features like sand blows and sunken areas. These were formed by the powerful 1811–12 New Madrid earthquakes long ago.
Most of the natural waterways in this area have been changed to help with farming. This has affected the homes of water animals and plants. However, the St. Francis Sunken Lands Wildlife Management Area is nearby. It protects some of the original bottomland hardwood forest that used to cover this region.

Education in Monette
Monette is home to the main office of the Buffalo Island Central School District. This school district serves over 850 students from elementary to high school. Students in Monette attend Buffalo Island Central High School. The school's sports teams are called the Mustangs.
The Buffalo Island Central School District was formed on July 1, 1984. Before that, Monette had its own school district. It joined with the Leachville School District to create the current district.
Public Library
The Kohn Memorial Library is Monette's public library. It is one of seven branch libraries that are part of the Crowley Ridge Regional library system.
Notable People from Monette
- Jim "Dandy" Mangrum is the lead singer of the Southern rock band Black Oak Arkansas.
- Dave Wallace is a Republican politician. He was a member of the Arkansas House of Representatives and used to live in Monette.
