The Phobetron hipparchia, also known as the monkey slug, is a type of moth. It belongs to a group of moths called Limacodidae. These moths are found in many parts of the Americas.
You can find the monkey slug moth in countries like Mexico, Panama, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas, Brazil, and Argentina.
What the Larvae Eat
The young monkey slug moths, which are called larvae, have a special diet. They like to eat the leaves of a tree known as Gliricidia sepium. This tree is sometimes called the "quickstick" or "cocoa shade" tree.
