History of Monte Rio

In the 1870s, Monte Rio was a stop on a railroad line. This railroad connected Cazadero to a ferry in Sausalito, California. Giant redwood trees were cut down here. The lumber was then shipped to help build the city of San Francisco.
After the sawmills closed, Monte Rio became a popular vacation spot. People from San Francisco would take trains to visit. They stayed in summer cabins and a large seven-story hotel. Part of the movie Holiday Inn (from 1942) was filmed at the Village Inn Resort in Monte Rio. Today, the trains no longer run. Most people who live here now stay all year.
Even though many trees were cut, a large group of old redwood trees was saved. This area was bought by the Bohemian Club in 1899. This club is a private group. They bought more land over time. Now, they own a large area used for their summer gatherings.
