History of Montgomery Village

How Montgomery Village Started in the 1960s

Montgomery Village was first planned in 1962 by a company called Kettler Brothers, Inc. The idea for this planned community came from an architect named Charles Kettler. He started Kettler Brothers with his brothers, Milton and Clarence, in 1952.

The first piece of land they bought was the Walker Farm in 1962. They later bought several other farms too. The Walker Farm was the biggest, covering about 412 acres. Today, many parts of Montgomery Village are on that original land, including neighborhoods like Walkers Choice and Cider Mill, the Montgomery Village Library, and even part of Lakeforest Mall.

The Kettler brothers started building the first house in Montgomery Village on February 28, 1966. The very first model homes opened in August 1967 in an area called Lakeside of Whetstone. The first people moved into Montgomery Village on September 25, 1967, in a neighborhood called Goshenside.

The Montgomery Village Foundation was officially created on October 17, 1966. This foundation helps manage the community. In 1968, the Whetstone Community Center opened. Also, Whetstone Elementary and Montgomery Village Junior High schools opened that same year.

Growth in the 1970s

In 1970, The Village Mall opened. This is now known as the Village Shopping Center on Montgomery Village Avenue. A Holiday Inn hotel also opened in 1971. In 1973, bus service started, connecting Montgomery Village to Washington, D.C..

Changes in the 1990s and 2000s

In 1998, Montgomery Village got its very own ZIP code, which is 20886. Before that, it used other ZIP codes. In 2007, the YMCA swimming pool in Montgomery Village closed.

Recent Developments in the 2010s and 2020s

The Montgomery Village Golf Club closed on November 30, 2014. This land is now being turned into a new neighborhood.

Montgomery Village is seeing many new developments. A company bought the old golf course. They plan to build the Bloom Montgomery Village neighborhood there. This new area will have an 80-acre park, a dog park, and new homes. Construction began in March 2020, with the first model homes opening in the fall of 2020.
