History of Montones
Montones has an interesting history, especially how it became part of the United States.
Becoming Part of the U.S.
Long ago, after a war called the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a special agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. After this, Puerto Rico became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it's a territory that belongs to the U.S. but is not fully part of it like a state.
Early Population Counts
In 1899, the United States Department of War did a special count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. At that time, Montones was actually split into two separate areas:
- Montones Abajo: This part had 899 people.
- Montones Arriba: This part had 937 people.
If you add them together, Montones had a total of 1,836 people in 1899.
Population Growth Over Time
The number of people living in Montones has changed a lot over the years. The U.S. government takes a census every ten years to count everyone. You can see how Montones has grown from the early 1900s until 2010.
