Montrose: A Look at Its Past

The suburb of Montrose got its name from the Montrose Estate. This estate was started in 1806 by a person named Robert Littlejohn.

Montrose House: A Historic Home

On the estate, Montrose House was built in 1813. This makes it the third oldest house in all of Tasmania! It is so important that it is officially listed on the Tasmanian Heritage Register. This means it is protected because of its history. Montrose officially became a suburb in 1961.

Fehlberg Pickled Onions: A Local Treat

In the 1930s, Elvina Fehlberg started a company called Blue Banner Pickled Onions. She opened a factory in Montrose in 1950. Later, a big supermarket chain bought the family name. But good news! The original recipe for these pickled onions has recently come back under the Blue Banner name.

New Homes for Families

Starting in 1948, the Hobart Savings Bank began building homes in Montrose. They built 38 brick houses near Riverway Road. These homes were made for young couples and people who had served in the military. The houses were built with different designs and good quality. People really liked them, especially with their nice gardens. By 1951, the bank started a new housing project in Rosetta. These homes were also planned carefully for good sunlight and views.

Montrose's Location and Travel

The River Derwent forms most of the north-eastern edge of Montrose. This means the suburb is right next to the river.

Getting Around Montrose

You can catch the Number 28 Metro Tasmania Bus in Montrose. A main road, National Route 1 (also called the Brooker Highway), runs through the suburb. This highway helps people travel from the north-east to the south-east.

Environmental Considerations in Montrose

There is a zinc factory nearby in Lutana called the Risdon Zinc Works. This factory has been running since 1917. It can release certain substances into the air, land, and water around the Greater Hobart area.

A report from 2018 looked at information about pollution. It showed that Hobart was among some Australian cities with environmental concerns. Data showed medium levels of air substances in areas like Montrose. These substances included things like nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide.
