Montrose Hagins was one of five children. Her father was a minister in the Episcopal church. Before she became a famous actress, Montrose was a 4th grade teacher. She taught at Williams Elementary School in Gary, Indiana. She was also a member of St. Augustine's Episcopal Church there.

Montrose Hagins was good friends with other well-known African-American actresses. These included Rosetta LeNoire, who was in Family Matters, and Esther Rolle, who played Florida Evans in Good Times.
