Moore Creek (which is called ruisseau Moore in French) is a cool stream, or small river, located in a place called South Algonquin. This area is in the Nipissing District of Northeastern Ontario, Canada. Moore Creek is part of a huge water system that eventually flows into the Saint Lawrence River. It's like a smaller helper river, joining the Madawaska River on its left side.
Where Moore Creek Flows
Moore Creek starts its journey at a place called Cross Lake. This starting point is quite high up, at about 441 meters (1,447 feet) above sea level. From there, the creek flows southwest for about 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) until it reaches McKenzie Lake. At McKenzie Lake, the elevation is a bit lower, around 395 meters (1,296 feet).
After McKenzie Lake, the creek changes direction and flows north for about 6.5 kilometers (4.0 miles). On its way, it passes by Moore Lake, which is at an elevation of 380 meters (1,247 feet). As it travels, another small stream called Coghlan Creek joins it from the right side. Coghlan Creek comes from Coghlan Lake.
Right at Moore Lake, another stream called Pastwa Creek flows into Moore Creek from the left side. Pastwa Creek comes from Pastwa Lake. Finally, Moore Creek continues heading north for about 7 kilometers (4.3 miles). It even goes under Ontario Highway 523 before it reaches its end, or "mouth," at the Madawaska River. The mouth of Moore Creek is at an elevation of 314 meters (1,030 feet). The Madawaska River then flows into the Ottawa River, and the Ottawa River eventually joins the mighty Saint Lawrence River.
The Creek's Surroundings
Most of Moore Creek is located entirely within South Algonquin, in the Nipissing District. However, some of the land that drains water into Moore Creek, like the southern part of McKenzie Lake and other small streams that flow from the south, is actually in a different area called Hastings Highlands, in Hastings County. This means that water from both areas helps to fill Moore Creek!
Smaller Streams Joining Moore Creek
Just like big rivers have smaller rivers flowing into them, Moore Creek also has its own helper streams, called tributaries. These are:
- Pastwa Creek (joins from the left side)
- Coghlan Creek (joins from the right side)
