Mooroobool is in the traditional lands of the Yidinji Aboriginal people. The name 'Mooroobool' comes from an Aboriginal word. It means 'meeting of the waters'. This name was given to the suburb in 1973. It's also the name of a peak located west of the suburb.
A street in Mooroobool, Kingsford Street, is named after Richard Ash Kingsford. He was the mayor of Cairns for a few years in the late 1800s.
One of the local schools, Balaclava State School, first opened its doors on 2 February 1954.
