Moravia is a town located in Cayuga County, New York. In 2010, about 3,626 people lived here.

The town of Moravia also has a village with the same name, Moravia. This area is part of the beautiful Finger Lakes region, found south of the city of Auburn.

History of Moravia

Moravia was once part of a special area called the Central New York Military Tract. The very first settlers arrived around 1789. At that time, Native American people still lived in the area.

The town of Moravia was officially created in 1833. It was formed from a nearby town called Sempronius. For a long time, Moravia was known for being a place where the Whig political party was still active. This party was no longer around in most places. Even in the early 1980s, some people in Moravia were still registered as Whigs!

Famous People from Moravia

Moravia has been home to several important people throughout history.

  • Abigail Fillmore: She was the First Lady of the United States.
  • Millard Fillmore: He became a US president. He was born just east of Moravia village and got married in the village itself.
  • John D. Rockefeller: This famous American businessman, known for his wealth, spent his childhood here.
  • John Wood: He was a governor of Illinois and also founded the city of Quincy, Illinois.

Geography of Moravia

The town of Moravia covers about 29.64 square miles (76.8 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water.

Moravia is located at the southern end of Owasco Lake. A river called the Owasco Inlet flows north through the town and into the lake. Another stream, Mill Creek, also flows into the Owasco Inlet near Moravia village.

Two main roads, New York State Route 38 and New York State Route 38A, meet in Moravia village.

  • Fillmore Glen State Park – A beautiful state park found southeast of Moravia village.
  • Four Town Corners – You can find this spot southeast of Owasco village, right at the eastern edge of the town.
  • Indian Grove – This location is north of Southeast Owasco.
  • Montville – A small community east of Moravia village. It used to be a competitor to Moravia village for importance.
  • Moravia – This is the main village within the town. It's where NY-38 and NY-38A roads meet, near the southern town line.
  • Owasco Hill – A community northwest of Owasco village, located at the town line.
  • Perkins Corners – This spot is at the western town line, south of Owasco Hill.
  • Southeast Owasco – A community located at the very southern end of Owasco Lake.
  • Toll Gate Corners – A community at the southern town line, just south of Moravia village.
  • Wilson Corners – This community is northeast of Moravia village, along NY-38A.
