Moreton Jeffries Church is an old church in a small village called Moreton Jeffries. It's about 9 miles (14.5 km) northeast of Hereford in Herefordshire, England. This church used to be an Anglican church, but it's not used for regular services anymore. It is now a "redundant" church, meaning it's no longer needed for its original purpose. It's a very important building, listed as Grade II* on the National Heritage List for England. The Churches Conservation Trust now looks after it.

A Look Back in Time

Building the Church

The Moreton Jeffries Church was built a very long time ago. It was constructed in the 13th or early 14th century. Later, the church was made longer towards the west.

Changes Over the Years

The church has been repaired and updated several times. It was first restored in the 18th century. A bigger restoration happened in 1860, led by a person named John Morley.

Becoming a Protected Site

In 1980, the church was declared "redundant," meaning it was no longer used for regular church services. In 1984, it was officially given to the Churches Conservation Trust. This trust helps to protect and care for old churches that are no longer in use.

What the Church Looks Like

Outside the Building

The church is made from sandstone and has a roof covered with tiles. It has a simple design, with a main area called a nave and a smaller section called a chancel, both under one roof. There's a porch on the south side. At the west end, there's a small tower for bells, called a bellcote. This bellcote is made of wood and covered with slates.

Even though the church has old parts, its outside look is in the Gothic Revival style. The oldest part of the church, from the medieval period, is the doorway on the south side. The roof is also likely from that same old time. On the south wall, there are two windows, each with two sections. The north wall has one similar window, plus other windows and a doorway that are now blocked up. The window at the east end has three sections.

Inside the Church

The inside of the church has plastered walls. The floor is covered with tiles, and some of them are special encaustic tiles with patterns. Many of the things inside the church, like the furniture, are from the 17th and 18th centuries.

This includes the screen that separates the chancel from the nave. The pulpit, where sermons are given, is in the Jacobean style. It has a special roof-like cover called a sounding board and a place for reading. The church also has old benches from the same time. There is even one special box pew, which is like a private seating area.

The font, used for baptisms, has a round bowl made of freestone. This bowl sits on a black marble base. On the east wall, there are boards with the Ten Commandments written on them. On the west wall, you can find boards with the Lord's Prayer and the Apostles' Creed.

There are also memorials, including a brass plate for John Morley. He was the person who helped restore the church and he died in 1899. The church has two bells. One bell is from the 16th century, and the other was made in 1709.
