Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Mormon Fork, also known as Mormon Fork Branch, is a small stream located in the western part of Missouri, a state in the United States. It flows through Bates County.

Mormon Fork Stream

Mormon Fork begins where its headwaters (the very start of the stream) are found just south of the border between Bates County and Cass County. This spot is near the town of Drexel.

The stream then flows towards the southeast, passing by the small community of Burdett. After that, it changes direction and heads northeast, flowing a few miles northwest of the town of Adrian. Mormon Fork then goes under a major road, U.S. Route 71, before it joins a larger river called the South Grand River. This meeting point, or confluence, is also located near the Bates-Cass county line.

The exact starting point of Mormon Fork is at 38°28′32″N 94°34′48″W / 38.47556°N 94.58000°W / 38.47556; -94.58000. The place where it joins the South Grand River is at 38°27′59″N 94°18′59″W / 38.46639°N 94.31639°W / 38.46639; -94.31639. At this point, the stream is about 781 feet (238 m) above sea level.

Why is it called Mormon Fork?

The name "Mormon Fork" comes from the early settlers of the area around the stream. Many of the first people who moved to and lived in this region were Mormons. Because of their presence, the stream was given the name Mormon Fork.
