Morristown is a small community, called a hamlet, located right by the Saint Lawrence River in St. Lawrence County, New York. It used to be a village but isn't anymore. In 2010, about 395 people lived here. The community got its name from Gouverneur Morris, an important person in American history.

Morristown is on the northern edge of the larger Town of Morristown. It is also near Gouverneur. Southwest of the community, you can find Jacques Cartier State Park. The Morristown Central School serves the students in the area.

A Look at Morristown's Past

The first people started settling in the Morristown area around 1804. However, the village itself wasn't truly established until 1808.

Morristown and the War of 1812

During the early days of the War of 1812, a naval battle happened right on the river near the village. Two warships fought each other in this important event.

Early Industry and Buildings

Because there wasn't much water power available, early mills in Morristown used a windmill in 1825. Later, a mill powered by steam was built. Several historic buildings in Morristown are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These include the Land Office, the Jacob Ford House, and the McConnell's Windmill. Other important sites are the Samuel Stocking House, the Paschal Miller House, the Morristown Schoolhouse, the United Methodist Church, and Wright's Stone Store.

Becoming a Hamlet Again

On June 27, 2018, the people living in the village of Morristown voted to dissolve it. This means they decided it would no longer be a village. The vote was 130 in favor and 47 against. This change officially happened on December 31, 2019, making Morristown a hamlet once more.

Important People from Morristown

  • William H. Comstock: He was known for making patent medicines, like the famous Dr. Morse's Indian Root Pills.
  • William H. 'Willie' Johnston: He was the youngest person ever to win the Medal of Honor. Willie was born and lived in Morristown as a child. He later moved to Montreal, Canada, and then to Derby, Vermont. He joined the army on December 1, 1861, when he was only 11 years old. He was a drummer in the 3rd Vermont Infantry. During battles near Richmond in June 1862, many soldiers were retreating. Willie was the only drummer who managed to keep his drum kit. Because of this brave act, he had the honor of drumming for the next division parade on July 4, 1862. The Secretary of War, Stanton, personally gave him his Medal of Honor.
