Moschus (Greek: Μόσχος) was an ancient Greek poet who lived around 150 BC. He was born in Syracuse, a Greek city in what is now Italy. Moschus was known for his special kind of poetry called "bucolic" poetry. This style often describes peaceful country life and shepherds. He was also a student of a famous teacher named Aristarchus of Samothrace.

Moschus wrote several poems that are still around today. One of his most famous works is called Europa. This poem tells the ancient Greek story of Europa, a princess who was carried away by the god Zeus in the form of a bull.

He also wrote shorter "bucolic" poems. These poems often featured myths and stories, not just simple country scenes. One of his complete short poems is called Runaway Love. His poems were written in a traditional Greek style called dactylic hexameter. They also used a specific Greek dialect called Doric.

How Moschus Influenced Others

Moschus's poem Europa is an important example of a type of short epic poem called an "epyllion." These were popular in ancient Greece. Even though we don't have many of his poems, Moschus likely had a big impact on other Greek poets who wrote about country life.

His poem Runaway Love also inspired later poets, including Bion of Smyrna. Over many centuries, writers in Europe continued to be inspired by Moschus's work. Famous authors like Torquato Tasso and Ben Jonson either copied his style or translated his poems.

Poems Not Really His

For a long time, two other poems were thought to be written by Moschus. However, experts now believe he did not write them.

One of these poems is called Epitaph on Bion. It is a sad poem written to honor another poet named Bion of Smyrna. This type of poem, called a "pastoral lament," became very popular. Many poets later wrote similar poems to mourn their friends.

The other poem is a short epic about Megara. She was the wife of the hero Heracles. This poem is a conversation between Heracles's mother and his wife. They talk about him being away.
