The Cathedral Church of Our Lady of Good Aid, often called Motherwell Cathedral, is a special Roman Catholic church in Motherwell, Scotland. It's the main church for the Diocese of Motherwell and where the Bishop of Motherwell has his official chair, called a cathedra.

History of Motherwell Cathedral

The Church of Our Lady of Good Aid in Motherwell first opened its doors on December 9, 1900. Many years later, in 1948, this church became a cathedral. This happened when the new Motherwell Diocese was created. A diocese is like a special church area.

The Scottish Catholic Directory from 1901 mentions the church's opening. It also describes the church's size and its main architectural features.

Music at the Cathedral

Motherwell Cathedral has a very large organ. It was updated in 2008 with new electronic parts. This organ is the biggest in any Roman Catholic church in the west of Scotland.

The cathedral's organist is John Pitcathley. He has played the organ during both visits by the Pope to Scotland. The Motherwell Diocesan Choir also sings at many important services. They also sing at the Saturday evening Mass. John Pitcathley also directs this choir.

Cathedral Architecture and Design

The cathedral was designed in the Gothic revival style. This means it looks like older Gothic churches. The famous architects Pugin & Pugin designed it. They designed many other Catholic churches in Scotland, England, and Ireland.

The church originally had a main altar and two smaller altars. However, these were changed in 1984. This was done to follow new rules from the Second Vatican Council.
