How Mount Aiken Got Its Name
Mount Aiken was named to honor a brave Canadian soldier. His name was Lieutenant John Alexander Aitken. He was from Prince George, British Columbia. Lieutenant Aitken sadly passed away during World War II. He was 27 years old when he was killed in action on August 27, 1944.
Remembering Lieutenant Aitken
Lieutenant Aitken joined the Canadian Army in September 1939. This was the same day Canada declared war. He trained as an Artillery Officer in Prince Rupert, British Columbia. In May 1944, he volunteered to join the British Army. He was killed on his very first day in battle. This happened while he was helping to cross the Seine River in France.
Records from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission show more about Lieutenant Aitken. He was serving with the 2nd Battalion of the Gordon Highlanders. This was part of the 227th Infantry Brigade (United Kingdom). Lieutenant Aitken is buried in France. His grave is at the Bretteville-sur-Laize Canadian War Cemetery in Calvados.
