The Hart Ranges are a major part of the Canadian Rockies. They are located in British Columbia, Canada. These mountains are often called the Northern Rockies. However, the even larger Muskwa Ranges are further north.

The Hart Ranges were named after John Hart. He was a former Premier (leader) of British Columbia. A highway that goes through the Pine Pass is also named after him. This highway connects different parts of the province.

Where are the Hart Ranges?

The Hart Ranges have clear natural borders. To the west and southwest, they are next to the Rocky Mountain Trench and the McGregor Plateau. To the north, the Peace Reach of Williston Lake forms a boundary.

To the east and northeast, the mountains meet the Rocky Mountain Foothills. The southern edge of the Hart Ranges is at Jarvis Creek. Mountains like Mount Ida and Mount Sir Alexander are south of Jarvis Creek. They are part of the Continental Ranges. These ranges are the main part of the Rocky Mountains. They stretch all the way south to Marias Pass in Montana, USA.

Tallest Peaks

The Hart Ranges are home to two very tall mountains. These are called "ultra-prominent peaks." This means they stand out a lot from the land around them.

The two ultra-prominent peaks in the Hart Ranges are:

Smaller Mountain Groups

The Hart Ranges are made up of several smaller mountain groups. These are officially recognized as subdivisions.

These official subdivisions include:

Some other areas in the Hart Ranges have unofficial names. For example, the area around Mount Sir Alexander is sometimes called the Mount Sir Alexander Group. However, this name is not officially recognized by mountain authorities.

Local Industries

The Hart Ranges area is important for mining. There are several large coal mines located here. These mines are focused around the towns of Tumbler Ridge and Chetwynd. Coal is a type of rock that is dug up from the ground and used as fuel.
