Mount Barnard, also called Boundary Peak 160, is a large mountain that sits right on the border between Alaska in the United States and British Columbia in Canada. It is part of the Alsek Ranges, which are a section of the huge Saint Elias Mountains. These mountains are known for being very tall and icy.

About Mount Barnard

Mount Barnard is a significant peak because it marks a point on the international border. It stands tall in a beautiful, wild area. The mountain is part of the Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve in Alaska. This park is famous for its amazing glaciers and wildlife.

Where is Mount Barnard?

This mountain is located in a remote and rugged area. It's found where the Stikine Region of British Columbia meets the Yakutat City and Borough, Alaska. The coordinates of Mount Barnard are 59°06′04″N 136°58′04″W. This means it's quite far north, in a cold and snowy region.

How Did it Get its Name?

For a while, the mountain was simply known as Boundary Peak 160. This name came from its role as a marker on the border. However, in 1923, it was officially named Mount Barnard. This was done to honor Edward Chester Barnard. He was an important person who worked on the Canada–United States border survey. From 1915 to 1921, he was a U.S. Boundary Commissioner. This job meant he helped decide exactly where the border should be. Before that, from 1903 to 1915, he was the chief mapmaker for the United States and Canada Boundary Survey. So, the mountain was named after him to recognize his hard work in mapping the border.

The First Climb

Climbing Mount Barnard is a big challenge. The first time anyone successfully reached the top was on August 24, 1966. Three climbers made this historic ascent. Their names were D. Kenyon King, Peter H. Robinson, and David P. Johnston. They started their climb from the top of Tarr Inlet. This inlet is a long, narrow arm of the sea that reaches into the land. Details about their amazing climb are kept at the Peak Service office in Bartlett Cove, which is in the Glacier Bay National Monument near Gustavus, Alaska.
