A Look Back at Mount Beppo's History

The name Mount Beppo comes from a nearby mountain. People think the name might come from the Yuggera word bippo, which means mountain. The first settlers arrived in the early 1880s. Families like the Granzeins and Sodens were among the first to live here.

Mount Beppo State School opened on 4 September 1893. Henry Plantagenet Somerset was the chairman of the school. In 1929, about 80 students attended the school. It closed its doors on 31 December 1972.

Churches and Community Life

By 1929, Mount Beppo had two churches: a Lutheran church and an Apostolic church. Both churches had their own cemeteries.

The Lutheran Church first opened on 12 August 1888. It was made bigger and re-dedicated in 1930.

The first services for the Apostolic Church were held in 1883. The church building was built around 1889. In 1911, the building was moved higher up a hill and made larger. More additions were made in 1934. Today, only the Apostolic Church building remains, but both church cemeteries are still there.

Mount Beppo was also famous for its brass band. The band started in 1898 and celebrated its 50th birthday in 1949.

The Caboonbah Undenominational Church is a special kind of church. It was started by Henry Plantagenet Somerset. The church is named "Caboonbah" after the Somerset family's home nearby.

Henry's wife, Katherine Rose Somerset, designed the wooden church. It was built by Lars Andersen and opened in 1905. It served the local farming families.

A public hall was opened in Mount Beppo on 15 March 1930. Henry Plantagenet Somerset, who used to be a local politician, opened the hall. The politician at the time, Ernest Grimstone, was also there.

In 2011, Mount Beppo had 347 people. By 2016, the population was 216 people. In 2021, the population grew slightly to 251 people.
