Mount Cabot is a mountain located in Coos County, New Hampshire, U.S.. It is the tallest peak in the Pilot Range, which is part of the larger White Mountains. The mountain was named after Sebastian Cabot, an Italian explorer.

About Mount Cabot

Mount Cabot stands tall at over 4,160 feet (1,268 meters) high. It is the highest point in the Pilot Range. To its northeast, you can find a peak called The Bulge. To its south, beyond an area known as Bunnell Notch, is Terrace Mountain.

Where the Water Flows

Water from Mount Cabot flows in different directions. On the west side, many small streams, called brooks, carry water into the Israel River. On the east side, water flows into the West Branch of the Upper Ammonoosuc River. Both of these rivers eventually connect to the large Connecticut River, which then flows all the way to Long Island Sound.

A Special Mountain: The 4000-Footers

Mount Cabot is a very special mountain because it is one of the "four-thousand footers" in New Hampshire. This is a list of mountains in the state that are at least 4,000 feet tall. Mount Cabot is the most northern mountain on this list in New Hampshire.

It is also on the "New England Fifty Finest" list. This list includes mountains that have a high "topographic prominence". Topographic prominence means how much a mountain rises above the land around it. Think of it as how much a mountain sticks out from its surroundings. Because a valley separates the Pilot Range from other White Mountains, Mount Cabot is quite isolated. This isolation gives it the fifth-highest topographic prominence in New Hampshire, and the fourteenth-highest in all of New England!
