About Mount Goddard
Mount Goddard stands at 13,564 feet (4,134 meters) above sea level. It's a well-known peak for climbers. The mountain is part of the beautiful and rugged Sierra Nevada range. This range stretches across much of California.
How Mount Goddard Got Its Name
The mountain was named after a civil engineer named George Henry Goddard. He was a surveyor who mapped parts of the Sierra Nevada in the 1850s. The name was given in 1864 by a group from the California Geological Survey. This group, led by William Henry Brewer, tried to climb the mountain twice that year but didn't succeed.
The First Climb to the Top
Fifteen years after the mountain was named, the first recorded climb happened. On September 23, 1879, two explorers, Lilbourne Winchell and Louis Davis, reached the summit. They climbed the mountain from its east side. Their route involved scrambling over Class 2 rocks. They started near Martha Lake and went up to Goddard Col. From there, they followed the Southwest Ridge to the top. They also had to navigate a short Class 3 section between the two highest points of Mount Goddard.
