Mount Hood is an unincorporated community. This means it's a place with a shared identity but no local government like a city. It's also a census-designated place (CDP), which is an area the government defines for counting people.
The community was named after the famous Mount Hood mountain. This mountain is the tallest in Oregon and a very important landmark. The first post office in the area was also named after the mountain.
In 1976, the post office in Mount Hood joined with the one in nearby Parkdale. Even though Parkdale was a larger community, local residents really liked the name "Mount Hood." So, the combined post office was named Mount Hood Parkdale.
Interestingly, there were two other places in Oregon that also had post offices named Mount Hood. One was in Wasco County and the other in Yamhill County. These places were likely named because they offered great views of the mountain.
