Mount Maude is a tall mountain in Washington state, ranking as the 15th highest peak there. It's part of the Entiat Mountains, which are a smaller group of mountains within the larger North Cascades range. You can find Mount Maude in the Glacier Peak Wilderness, right where the Entiat River begins. The mountain was named by Albert H. Sylvester to honor Frederick Stanley Maude.
If you look at Mount Maude from the south, you'll see mostly loose rocks and small rocky areas. This side is often compared to mountains in the Colorado Rockies. However, the northeast side looks very different. It has a steep, rocky top that protects the small Entiat Glacier. Many climbers like to climb Mount Maude, Seven Fingered Jack, and sometimes Mount Fernow all in one trip.

What is Mount Maude Made Of?
Mount Maude is mostly made of a type of rock called Orthogneiss and another rock called Tonalite. These rocks formed a very long time ago, during the Cretaceous period.
Different Rock Types on the Mountain
The southwest side of the mountain also has older Orthogneiss and other kinds of metamorphic rocks. These rocks changed over time due to heat and pressure. The northeast side of Mount Maude has different rocks too, including Quartz Diorite and small amounts of marble.
How the Mountain Was Shaped
You can also find many "normal faults" on Mount Maude. These are cracks in the Earth's crust where sections of rock have moved apart. There's also a smaller "strike-slip fault" near Spectacle Buttes, where rocks slide past each other horizontally. These faults show how the Earth's crust has shifted and shaped the mountain over millions of years.
