Mount Pleasant is a town in Westchester County, New York. It is part of the larger New York metropolitan area. In 2020, about 44,436 people lived here.

The town includes several smaller communities. These are called hamlets and villages. Some of the hamlets are Valhalla, Hawthorne, Pocantico Hills, and Thornwood. The villages include Pleasantville, Sleepy Hollow, and a small part of Briarcliff Manor.

History of Mount Pleasant

A very important historical place in Mount Pleasant is Kykuit. This was the home of the famous John D. Rockefeller Estate family. It is located in Pocantico Hills.

Kykuit was recognized as a National Historic Landmark in 1976. This means it is a place of great historical importance in the United States.

Geography and Location

Mount Pleasant is located about 27 miles north of Manhattan. That's about a 45-minute drive from New York City.

The town covers a total area of about 32.7 square miles (84.9 square kilometers). Most of this area is land. About 5.0 square miles (13.8 square kilometers) of the town is water.

Communities in Mount Pleasant

Mount Pleasant is made up of several smaller towns and villages. Each has its own unique feel. Here are some of them:

Archville – A small community found south of Scarborough.
Briarcliff Manor – Part of this village is located within Mount Pleasant.
Hawthorne – A hamlet in the eastern part of the town.
Pleasantville – A village located in the northeastern section of the town.
Pocantico Hills – A hamlet in the center of the town. It's northeast of Sleepy Hollow.
Scarborough – A hamlet in the northern part of the town. It's shared between Briarcliff Manor and Ossining.
Sleepy Hollow – This village is in the southwestern part of the town. It was once called North Tarrytown.
Thornwood – A hamlet located just south of Pleasantville.
Valhalla – A hamlet in the southeastern part of the town. The main town hall for Mount Pleasant is located here.

Biotechnology Research Center

Mount Pleasant is becoming a hub for science and research. In 2017, officials announced plans for a large biotechnology center. This center is being built next to the Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla.

This new center is a big project. It is expected to create many new jobs. It will also have a lot of space for biotechnology research. This shows how Mount Pleasant is growing and looking towards the future.
