History of Mount Plymouth
Mount Plymouth was once famous for its golf resort. In 1926, the historic Mount Plymouth Hotel was built. It cost $350,000, which was a lot of money back then! This hotel became a very popular spot.
Many famous people visited the hotel. These included baseball legend Babe Ruth and singer Kate Smith. They could even fly their planes right to the hotel's own airfield.
The plan was to build four large golf courses, like the famous St. Andrews course in Scotland. But a big real estate problem in Florida in 1926 stopped most of the plans. Only one course, the Mount Plymouth Golf Club, was finished. It closed in 2007. A famous golfer named Lucia Mida even stayed in Mount Plymouth when she played in Florida golf tournaments.
Later, in 1959, a school called Florida Central Academy took over the hotel building. It started as a boarding school for boys. In 1971, girls were also allowed to attend. The school stayed open until 1983. After the school closed, the old hotel building was damaged by vandals. Sadly, fires in 1986 and 1987 completely destroyed the building.
