Mount Selwyn is a tall mountain in Glacier National Park, British Columbia, Canada. It stands 3,335-metre (10,942-foot) high. This mountain is part of the Selkirk Mountains range.

Mount Selwyn is located about 60 km (37 mi) east of Revelstoke. It is also about 35 km (22 mi) southwest of Golden. The closest higher peak is Mount Dawson, which is only 1 km (0.62 mi) to the west.

History of Mount Selwyn's Name

The mountain was first named Deville in 1888. This name was given by a mountaineer named Rev. William S. Green. Later, the mountain was renamed to honor Alfred Richard Cecil Selwyn. He was an important person who led the Geological Survey of Canada. He was also the President of the Royal Society of Canada. The new name, Mount Selwyn, became official on September 8, 1932. This decision was made by the Geographical Names Board of Canada.

First Climbers of Mount Selwyn

The first time anyone successfully climbed Mount Selwyn was in 1890. A team of four climbers reached the top. These climbers were Harold E. Forster, Harold Ward Topham, Harry Sinclair, and Samuel Yves.

Weather and Glaciers at Mount Selwyn

Mount Selwyn has a subarctic climate. This means it has very cold, snowy winters. The summers are usually mild. Temperatures can drop below −20 °C. With the wind, it can feel even colder, below −30 °C.

This cold weather helps create many glaciers around the mountain.
