Revelstoke is a city in southeastern British Columbia, Canada. It is home to about 8,275 people as of 2021. The city is located about 641 kilometers (398 miles) east of Vancouver and 415 kilometers (258 miles) west of Calgary, Alberta.

Revelstoke sits on the banks of the Columbia River, just south of the Revelstoke Dam. It is also close to where the Columbia River meets the Illecillewaet River. To the east, you'll find the Selkirk Mountains and Glacier National Park. These areas are crossed by Rogers Pass, which is used by the Trans-Canada Highway and the Canadian Pacific Railway.

South of Revelstoke, along the Columbia River, are the Arrow Lakes, Mount Begbie, and the Kootenays region. To the west, Eagle Pass cuts through the Monashee Mountains, leading to Shuswap Lake.

History of Revelstoke

Railway station in Revelstoke, British Columbia - 1915
Revelstoke's railway station in 1915

Revelstoke began in the 1880s when the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) was built through the area. Mining was a very important industry in the early days. The city was first called Farwell, named after a local landowner and surveyor. Even before that, it was known as the "Second Crossing" because it was the second place the Canadian Pacific Railway crossed the Columbia River.

The city got its current name from the Canadian Pacific Railway. They named it after Lord Revelstoke, who was the head of Baring Brothers & Co., a UK bank. This bank helped save the Canadian Pacific Railway from going bankrupt in 1885 by buying its unsold bonds. This allowed the railway to be finished. The city's post office opened in 1886.

Growth and Tourism in Revelstoke

The building of the Trans-Canada Highway in 1962 made it easier to get to Revelstoke. Since then, tourism has become a very important part of the local economy. Skiing is now the most popular attraction. Mount Revelstoke National Park is located just north of the town.

A big new ski resort, Revelstoke Mountain Resort, started being built on Mount MacKenzie in late 2005. It first opened for the 2007-2008 ski season. Revelstoke is also home to a railway museum, which tells the story of the city's connection to trains.

Wildlife in Revelstoke

Revelstoke is located in an area where both black bears and grizzly bears live. In 1994, the city's garbage dump was surrounded by an electric fence. This stopped bears from eating garbage there. However, the bears that used to feed at the dump then started looking for food in town. Many of these bears had to be removed because they became a problem.

Because so many bears were removed, an education program was created. This program teaches people how to keep bears wild and how to keep the community safe.

Revelstoke's Snowy Winters

Revelstoke holds the Canadian record for the most snow in a single winter. During the winter of 1971–72, an amazing 2,447 centimeters (963 inches) of snow fell on Mt. Copeland, just outside of town. That's more than 80 feet (24 meters) of snow! The town itself received 779 centimeters (307 inches) of snow that winter. The snow levels were higher than many roofs in town by several meters.

Economy of Revelstoke

Revelstoke's economy has always been strongly connected to the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR). This connection is still important today. However, other industries like forestry, construction, tourism, and retail have grown a lot in recent years. The Revelstoke Railway Museum shows the town's ongoing link to the Canadian Pacific Railway and is a popular place for tourists to visit.

Revelstoke Dam and Downtown Renewal

Revelstoke is also where the Revelstoke Dam is located. This dam was built on the Columbia River and was finished in 1984. In 1986, after the dam was completed and a local sawmill temporarily closed, the City of Revelstoke started a project to improve its downtown area. This project was very successful and helped the city's economy.

The city has its own airport, called Revelstoke Airport.

Revelstoke Mountain Resort Development

A small ski resort with one short lift has been operating on Mount MacKenzie since the 1960s. Higher up the mountain, people could also go snowcat skiing. A strong effort was made to turn the entire mountain into a large resort, and construction began in the early 2000s.

Revelstoke Mountain Resort opened in the winter of 2007/8. It is known for having North America's greatest vertical drop, which is 1,713 meters (5,620 feet). The resort offers a huge area for skiing, including 3,121 acres of fall line skiing, high alpine bowls, and 13 areas with trees to ski through. It also has more groomed trails.

Revelstoke Mountain Resort was once the only resort in the world to offer lift, cat, heli, and backcountry skiing all from one main village. Even though economic conditions changed after 2008, the resort plans to keep growing. New lifts, hotels, condos, and a golf course are planned for 2025.

Nels Nelsen Hill, first known as Big Hill, opened in 1916. Revelstoke became a famous place for ski jumping around the world. Top athletes came for the yearly tournament. Revelstoke's own Nels Nelsen set a world record on the hill, jumping 73 meters (240 feet) in 1925. Later, Bob Lymburne set another record of 82 meters (269 feet) in 1932.

The hill was completely updated by 1948, which led to more international tournaments. The town even thought about trying to host the 1968 Winter Olympics. However, interest in ski jumping began to decline in the 1960s, and fewer people came to watch. The last tournament was held in 1975.
