About Mount Stephenson

Mount Stephenson is located in a beautiful, rugged area of Northern British Columbia. It is one of many peaks that make up the stunning landscape of the Canadian Rockies. The mountain's height makes it a notable feature in its region.

Why the Name Mount Stephenson?

This mountain is named to honor a brave Canadian soldier. His name was Corporal Harry Stephenson. He was from a place called Kilkerran, which is north of Dawson Creek, BC.

Corporal Harry Stephenson's Service

Corporal Stephenson was a member of the Canadian Army. He served with a special group called the 10 Field Squadron of the Canadian Military Engineers. These engineers are soldiers who help build things like bridges or clear paths. Corporal Stephenson was part of the 5th Canadian Armoured Division during World War II.

He was involved in fighting along the Gothic Line in Italy. This was a very strong defensive line built during the war. Sadly, Corporal Stephenson was killed in action on September 11, 1944, when he was 31 years old. He is buried in Italy at the Gradara War Cemetery. Naming the mountain after him helps remember his courage and sacrifice.
