Mount Sterling's Location and Size
Mount Sterling is located in the state of Ohio. The village covers a total area of about 1.73 square miles (4.48 square kilometers). All of this area is land, meaning there are no large lakes or rivers within the village limits.
A Look Back at Mount Sterling's History
Mount Sterling was first planned out in 1826 or 1828 by a person named John J. Smith. He named the village after his hometown, Mount Sterling, Kentucky. The plans for the new village were officially recorded in London on June 26, 1829.
The first post office in Mount Sterling opened on June 8, 1830. Rowland Wilson was the first postmaster. The village officially became a town on March 12, 1845. Its borders were made larger in 1873.
By 1875, Mount Sterling had grown quite a bit. It had three churches, a bank, and many different types of stores. These included places to buy clothes, groceries, and medicine. There was also a hotel, shops for making harnesses, and a hardware store. The village even had companies that made carriages and wagons. There were also doctors and a flour mill.
By 1915, Mount Sterling had modern features like electricity and a city water system. It also had two grain elevators, an opera house for performances, and both a high school and a grade school. Many churches and stores continued to serve the community.
